CASE STUDY

Helping an Ivy League university move quickly to address license management and maintain trust.

In a university setting, a Cognos Analytics Administrator license gives a user access to sensitive information on students and faculty, and to proprietary research data. It allows a user to make changes to the university’s analytics platform. In the right hands, it’s a license to help ensure data integrity, drive decision-making, comply with regulations, and cultivate trust. After an upgrade to a new version of Cognos Business Analytics, our client discovered that these powerful licenses had been inadvertently granted to users who did not require that level of access. This put the school’s data and reputation at risk and could have led to non-compliance with licensing agreements and fees for additional, unneeded licenses. School leadership moved quickly. And they called on Ironside.

How we delivered

01

IDENTIFY THE CAUSE

Cognos Analytics grants capabilities based on user roles. Ironside helped leverage the user access query tool in Motio PI, revealing the primary Cognos roles that were inadvertently being granted Analytics Administrator capabilities.
02

DEVELOP A QUICK SOLVE

Ironside helped utilize Cognos Analytics tools to ensure that upon every user’s next log-in, the appropriate licensing was assigned.
03

ADDRESS ANOMALIES

Ironside helped identify additional anomalies in the system that were impacting user permissions, and repeated identification and remediation processes until all users were assigned the expected licensing for their roles.
