Course Outline

Ironside’s 4-day IBM InfoSphere DataStage Essentials course gives information management professionals the foundational knowledge necessary for successfully incorporating DataStage’s powerful capabilities into their company’s data handling process. Our world-class instructors will give you an inside look at the architecture, configuration options, job definitions, and data combination tasks required to become a strong DataStage practitioner.


This course is intended for anyone who is involved in data handling and processing for their organization. Some familiarity with database access techniques is helpful in understanding the course, and a basic knowledge of the Windows operating system is mandatory.

Course Goals

  • Introduce DataStage, its components, its capabilities, and its interface.

  • Build competency with DataStage administration and metadata development.

  • Establish familiarity with the job creation process in DataStage and the different transformation activities that are possible, such as combining data, partitioning, collecting, group processing, and sequential data access.

  • Deliver a firm foundation around working with different data types, controlling jobs, and utilizing repository functions

High-Level Curriculum

  • Describe and discuss the core elements of DataStage/the DataStage workflow, including how it fits within the Information Server and how both it and the Information Server can be deployed.

  • Become comfortable with using the Information Server Web Console and the DataStage Administrator client to create DataStage users and configure the DataStage environment.

  • Import and export the DataStage objects you want to include from or to a file and import table definitions for sequential files and relational tables.

  • Complete the full design process for DataStage parallel jobs, including creation, compiling, running, and monitoring, design jobs that can read and write to sequential files, and become capable of describing the DataStage parallel processing architecture.

  • Design more complex jobs that combine data through joins and lookups and have sorting and aggregation capabilities.

  • Use DataStage Transformer to implement sophisticated business logic.

  • Debug your jobs using the DataStage PX Debugger.

  • Read and write to database tables through the DataStage ODBC and DB2 Connectors.

  • Leverage Repository functions like search and impact analyses.

  • Set up job sequences to control batches of jobs.
