Global asset manager with investment offices in major trading centers worldwide.

BUSINESS NEED


The company was struggling with how to unify its analytics approach, while remaining compliant with financial industry standards. With different departments gathering information in disparate ways, the existing model was not sustainable. It was imperative to identify common use cases, target a short list of vendors whose capabilities matched the use cases, and navigate the RFP and demo processes.

SOLUTION


Ironside was called in, and made it clear from the outset that system selection is about people, not just technology. The approach consisted of four steps:


Make Analytics Human


  • Start by focusing on people, rather than platform features

  • Conduct interviews to identify the questions, goals, and pain points that stakeholders need to address via analytics

  • Classify 92 distinct use cases by tying them into analytics technical capabilities


Narrow the Focus


  • Match key criteria with vendor prospects based on Ironside’s 20 years of experience and research from Gartner, Forrester, Nucleus, Ovum and BBT

  • Build a short list of five vendors and send out Requests for Proposal (RFPs)


Dig Deeper


  • Develop a data set and demo scenario that measures how each platform meets company’s data needs

  • Process survey responses from stakeholders after each demo to get their assessments of vendor performance against scoring criteria


Make the Choice


  • Generate scores of which vendors best meet company needs, based on stakeholder survey responses, capability requirements, and financial services industry standards

  • Choose the best fit based on the vendor’s balance between enterprise BI and data discovery, security options, MS Office Integration, and on-premises installation

Outdated processes and siloed legacy solutions were hampering self-service analysis and fragmenting the company’s view of their data. IT leadership knew they were falling into technical debt and were trying to modernize and centralize. They needed an upgraded data and analytics ecosystem geared toward user experience and brought Ironside on as a partner.

SOLUTION


Ironside approached the engagement with one overarching principle in mind—namely, that a successful migration starts with targeted action. To that end, we worked with our client to:


Diagnose Issues & Maximize Resources


  • Install a new IBM Sterling Commerce engine to integrate with the company’s wider IBM Cognos BI reporting implementation—and determine which one should track fulfillment metrics

  • Balance the need for answers now with long-term analytics sustainability


Create a Centralized Data Source


  • Connect the new Sterling Commerce data source to the data warehouse, and build reports on it

  • Provide a timely feed of usable, actionable fulfillment information linked to other key metrics, allowing broader comparisons and new insights


Modernize the BI Environment


  • Perform a checkup on analytics system health, which led to the decision to upgrade the Cognos BI platform, migrate critical reports, and update cubes to support high-use data sets

  • Ensure a modern BI platform was ready to support the full enterprise view users would now have


Create New Assets & Enable Users


  • Leverage new updates to develop new data views and supply chain improvements

  • Implement a new end-to-end merchandise planning infrastructure, which required building a data mart containing relevant data warehouse information, dynamic cubes for key data sets, and reports on key metrics

Leading investment advisory firm with more than 10,000 employees and greater than $1 billion in revenue—a major player in the financial services industry.

BUSINESS NEED


The client’s IT group struggled to keep their governance and planning efforts moving at the pace of business. They’d attempted to centralize their data sources and generate more actionable reporting, but their outdated infrastructure couldn’t meet increased information demands or integrate effectively with their BI reporting. To solve these issues, the client was tasked with moving their data warehouse to a more modern solution.

SOLUTION


The Ironside Information Management team worked hand-in-hand with the client’s database engineers to move the warehousing infrastructure out of the current obsolete environment to a more modern data warehouse. Our solution required us to:


Develop a Migration Plan


  • Outline a plan that addressed pain points occurring between the data warehouse and the Cognos BI reporting layer, increased query efficiency, and enabled timely analytics

  • Include recommendations for storing historical point-in-time data for more accurate referencing of past events


Document and Test


  • Document existing warehouse logic, including extracts, transformations and schedules

  • Serve as the solution architect for a proof of concept of the data warehouse redesign

  • Test data handling and report output using POC system


Consolidate


  • Bring together approximately 20 tables from an array of data sources, including TM1, A-Track, Remedy, Oracle GL, and Excel, into an IBM PureData for Analytics (Netezza) implementation capable of meeting and exceeding client requirements


Reengineer


  • Reengineer both the ETL processes used to move and transform all the different information streams and the reporting layer making that information available for analysis


KEYS TO SUCCESS


The modernizing of the data warehouse has enabled the client to:

  • Improve ease of use and performance in Cognos reporting

  • Enable time comparison reporting, such as evaluating last month’s data against today’s data

  • Increase performance approximately 60 times faster than with the previous environment—reports that used to take two minutes to run are now taking two seconds
