Cubes (including Cognos PowerCubes and Dynamic Cubes, as well as other file-based cube technologies) are well-known, commonly used, and valuable data sources in reporting.  As specially indexed binary files, report performance with cubes is generally robust, however when cube files grow very large (or there is high simultaneous demand reading from the cube), response time can and will decrease. That’s why it can sometimes be useful to show cube sizes on BI reports to let authors know when a cube’s size could be affecting performance. Read more

The immense amount of data being collected today, in any industry, expands the reality of advanced analytics and data science. In concept, it creates an explosion of opportunities and expands what can be accomplished. In reality, we are often limited in scope by our data processing systems which may not be able to handle the complexity and quantity of data available to us. The introduction of Spark has offered a solution to this issue with a cluster computing platform that outperforms Hadoop. Its Resilient Distributed Dataset (RDD) allows for parallel processing on a distributed collection of objects enhancing the speed of data processing. For this reason, Spark has received a lot of interest and promotion in the world of big data and advanced analytics, and for good reason. Read more

We heard a lot of great questions during the Cognos Analytics Webinar Q&A we held after our live presentation. The discussion was so productive we thought we’d roll out a transcript as an article so all of you can easily get the Cognos Analytics answers you’re searching for. Read more

By now we all know that Hadoop is a central part of many big data projects, but how do we integrate this technology with some of the more traditional approaches to data handling? Is there a way to make sure our Hadoop cluster is interacting with and enriching the rest of our analytics environment? Luckily, there’s a whole suite of utilities that interact with Hadoop to address these questions, and it’s important to know what they are and how to take advantage of them. In this article, we’re going to take a quick look at five commonly used utilities in the Hadoop Ecosystem to help you understand how they can be used to integrate the Hadoop framework with more traditional relational databases and leverage the data for analytical purposes. The modern data landscape is so much more diverse than it was in the past, and the modern data warehouse needs to increase its flexibility to keep up. In the modern warehouse, it’s not enough to just source all the data; it’s equally important to source all data types as well. Data professionals need to derive insights from various systems of engagement (social media, mobile), systems of record (ERP systems, CRM systems, databases), and the Internet of Things, which means sourcing unstructured, semi-structured and structured data. These needs are driving a rapid evolution away from the familiar enterprise data warehouse (EDW) and toward a new, more flexible solution: the logical data warehouse (LDW). Read more

This year’s IBM Insight conference has been chock full of many exciting announcements so far, including news about the next version of Cognos BI – Cognos Analytics.

Scheduled for general release by the end of 2015, Cognos Analytics promises an improved total experience for the entire analytics community from the business user to the IT developer, delivering enhanced usability focused on bringing together self-service and governance, two areas often thought to be incompatible. Cognos Analytics aims to change that perception by addressing both the increasing pressure for self-service and the critical need for governance in one elegant and intuitive enterprise-ready platform.
